NEWS |
Welcome to a new year and a new Website!
Part of our new tactile mural, completed in January 09 by Hannah, a Visual Arts graduate. |
We have had a very busy start to the year with many extra students. Our Community Awareness students from Xavier College, Catholic Ladies College and Koonung College were great. Everyone who worked with them commented on their willingness to be involved, moving confidently around to lots of different groups. Their mature and open minded approaches resulted in an enjoyable and worthwhile experience for everyone. We have also established a relationship with Latrobe University, particularly the Occupational Therapy students, two of whom we recently had on three-week placements. Again, they were very impressive, interacting comfortably, and taking a real interest in our programs. We have students from Latrobe throughout the year, with two having started in May. We also welcome Todd from North Carolina, on a volunteer placement as part of his Political Science Degree. We continue to support the Koonung community service program for year nine students. We will have several students here on most Wednesdays throughout the year. This gives us a great opportunity to further expand the social awareness of young people within our already very diversified community. Feed back so far has been very positive. We also have a class from Onemda attending one day a week undertaking literacy and numeracy certificate courses. Barnabas Counselling Services have a playgroup and family self help group which will run after Easter providing support for families with children with disability within the local Chinese community. Our special Horticulture Teamleader Donna, is on maternity leave and has been replaced by Daniel. Daniel has training, experience, and a background in gardening, environmental and human relationship fields.

VOLUNTEERS |
There have been a few changes to the volunteer body over the past year.
|
We said a reluctant good bye to several long time retiring volunteers. We acknowledge their generous and lively contributions both to the operation and philosophy of the Centre. The good news is that we have had lots of queries from people interested in volunteering and we now have new volunteers starting. In addition to the new year’s new volunteers we now welcome Helen, Elenor and Bill, Shane and Jacqui. We are also providing another volunteer training day, as a follow up to the previous day, on May 28th. However, we also have new groups and do need more volunteers. So if you know someone who might be suited to the Centre please mention it to them, or even better, bring them along for a visit?

SOME FRIENDS |
John has been an enthusiastic member of the KHGC community for many years.

John has now 'clocked up' twenty years and is very much a feature of the place. Many of us share the familiar sight of John having a quiet lunch in the gazebo, or exchanging his trademark cheeky comments with Rod. Kevin has been attending for 15 years and is another very familiar face. Most of us have been met at some time with his smile. They continue to be lively participants in Rod's program.
