Happy New Year! As we start 2010, we celebrate many positive events at the Centre. |
To view this Newsletter, The Spring Fair was held on Saturday 17th October, but plants can still be purchased as usual - phone for information |
Our Spring Fair was very successful and everyone who attended seemed to have had an enjoyable day. As we are an independent charity we do rely on fundraisers such as the Fairs to contribute to the funds needed to develop innovative, interesting and diverse programs for all our participants. Our next Fair will be in April, when planting and growing conditions will be very different. We have benefited from having Latrobe University students undertaking placements again throughout the year, with approximately 25 students, each here for between three to ten weeks. Their expertise has added depth to the programs and they have worked closely with a number of individuals and groups. Our search for an art therapist has been successful and we welcome Maria, who attends on Fridays and encourages participants to join her in exploring art opportunities, often integrating the garden with art and allowing people to play around with art. Volunteers have also joined in, experimenting with different forms of art freely, and without any expectation of what they should create. The previous year was the thirtieth anniversary of continuous service for the Centre which began with volunteer led, part time programs for children in special schools in 1979. This has now grown to include over 400 adults and children who attend on a rostered basis, supported by attending staff and approximately 90 volunteers. The Centre has always drawn enthusiastic and committed volunteers and without them the Centre would not have survived and grown as it has. We currently have seven students from secondary colleges undertaking community awareness and we are committed to continuing to provide opportunities for young people to increase their understanding of disability.
