Some Snippets from this season's Activity Sheets: ‘Made jigsaw puzzle hands as it was raining, then each child planted nasturtium seeds to take back to school in a punnet’. ‘visited and fed the fish, through the children’s garden; they especially enjoyed the mirror boxes, then off to the vegetable plot to pick beans and silverbeet and look for snails. The children enjoyed the activities despite the lack of worms and snails.’ ‘Fed the fish and all the children loved the various outdoor activities. As it was raining, they made new name tags and then went to the gazebo to pot a plant to take back to school.’ ‘We had a look at some worms and caterpillars in the magnifying containers, digging, planting, discovering worms, snails and a grub then watered all the seedlings.’

Many people look forward to the Fair as an opportunity to stock up on Spring and Summer plants. Others just enjoy the atmosphere of the day and take advantage of the lovely environment to wander around, chat, or have morning, lunch or afternoon tea in the gardens. The Centre has a commitment to helping young people have a more balanced understanding of disability so continues to host students on community placement from various schools: Koonung College, Doncaster College, Our Lady of Sion College and Fintona College. We have found the students to be sensitive to disability and prepared to join in with a wide range of groups and activities. The Kevin Heinze Garden Centre has volunteering opportunities - two hour sessions throughout the week, providing garden and art activities for adults and children with disability. Volunteers who enjoy social interaction and are open minded, tolerant and demonstrate empathy are welcome to phone Amanda on (03) 9848 3695 or email amanda.m.khgc@hotkey.net.au. All volunteers are required to have a current police check and Working With Children card”.
