You
do not need gardening expertise or experience with disabilities. Our volunteers just
need enthusiasm and an interest in people. You may also like to help out by assisting with

SENSORY SWING |
The Sensory Swing is a fun and functional addition to the Centre. |

It was designed and developed at the Centre to provide a sensory garden experience for those attending who are limited in the way they interact with the garden. The swing provides various sensory experiences including a gentle swaying movement that is particularly effective for those with proprioceptive or vestibular dysfunction.
Children with autism often feel more balanced and relaxed with the movement of the swing and it can increase concentration. Young children enjoy the swing’s movement and it might fit up to ten children on the swing at one time. The swing has been built to be strong, safe and robust enough to cope with the continuous use by a range of users. Not only children appreciate the calming and relaxation properties of the swing - it is also very popular with adults.
The swing has a transparent base where children or adults can sit or lie down and look through it to a garden growing under the swing. A small landscape provides interest; this includes the sound and movement of a small stream of water that runs under the swing. The swing is placed in such a way in the garden that it gains many of the benefits of the garden including the gentle sounds of the Centre’s main stream that runs next to the swing.
It is designed to be an active part of the garden and integrates the natural sounds of native birds and the filtered light of the overhanging trees. The sensory swing provides another opportunity for everyone to enjoy a garden experience at the Kevin Heinze Garden Centre.
The design and construction of this swing was a wonderful team effort and only possible through the generous support of the Bendigo Bank. The swing has a plaque in honour of Kevin Heinze and was launched by Kevin’s wife and extended family.
